The human body is a walking ecosystem: There are ten times more microbial cells living on the surfaces of our bodies—both inner and outer—than there are human cells.(1) Our very survival depends on them.
Throughout the human life cycle, the GI tract microbiome usually maintains a positive symbiotic relationship with its host, bringing with it far-reaching metabolic, immunological, nutritional, and psychological effects.(2) Many factors, however, can reduce and negatively affect the number of protective friendly bacteria in our gut that are there to protect us: poor dietary habits and lifestyle choices, presence of infection, stress, the use of antibiotics in food production and medical treatments, aging, chlorinated drinking water, cooked and hyper-processed foods, to name some.(3) A reduction in the number of good bacteria allows bad bacteria to populate and wreak havoc on our wellbeing (also known as intestinal dysbiosis). Left untreated, the symptoms of imbalanced gut flora can become chronic, and lead to serious health concerns.(4)
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines probiotics as “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”(5) By restoring a disrupted gut flora equilibrium, probiotics promote the functional state of the immune system in its role to combat and prevent infection by microbes (bacteria, viruses, yeasts, fungus, and their pathogens), thereby acting as therapeutic agents.(6)(7)(8)(9) Probiotics also have wide-ranging effects outside our GI tract and immune system, including on the liver, brain, and weight management system.(10)
With access to high-quality probiotics, we can find relief from gastrointestinal and other disorders by selectively—and safely—manipulating the microbiome in the direction of supporting and improving its extensive benefits for health.
To make Udo’s Choice® probiotic blends ‘with health in mind’, we deliberately chose to work with human-adapted (HA) live probiotic strains that survive stomach acid and bile, and reach the intestinal tract at full potency. Unlike the transient (or non-HA) dairy- and plant-derived bacteria used in many foods and supplements being marketed today, HA probiotic strains successfully implant and colonize the human digestive tract where they can live and confer their benefits for up to two weeks. Transient probiotics stick around for about a day.
The types and amounts of probiotics found in a healthy gut change over the life cycle and under different circumstances. To produce the best results and provide your family with the most health-supporting probiotic supplements available, we formulated 4 age-specific and 3 condition-specific probiotic blends. Each of our supplement formulas contains a different combination of probiotics strains because, like people, probiotics work better in teams than alone.
You’ll find Udo’s Choice® probiotic blends in brown glass bottles, in the cooler, in the supplement section of your local whole foods market or natural food store.
WHO IS UDO’S CHOICE® INFANT’S PROBIOTIC DESIGNED FOR? Beneficial bacteria (aka probiotics) are required for digestive and overall health at all stages of the human life cycle – from fetal development to advanced age – which means that probiotics are good for everyone. However, the amount and blends that give the best results are different at different stages of the life cycle. We created this formula specifically for infants and children up to 5 years old.
This formula provides the most beneficial probiotics found in the intestine of infants, including Bifidobacterium infantis. It is designed to help with A) infants born by Caesarian who were not colonized via mother’s birth canal; B) babies born preterm; C) infants not being breastfed; D) infants taking a course of antibiotics; E) formula-fed infants; F) diarrhea; G) constipation; H) lactose intolerance; I) protection from unfriendly microbes, both at home and abroad; J) immune support; K) infections; L) rashes; and M) yeast overgrowth (thrush).*
INGREDIENTS: Udo’s Choice® Infant’s Probiotic blend contains the following infant-specific and human-adapted probiotic strains: Lactobacillus casei HA-108 (35%**); Lactobacillus rhamnosus HA-111 (25%**); Lactobacillus acidophilus HA-122 (15%**); Bifidobacterium infantis HA-116 (15%**); Bifidobacterium bifidum HA-132 (5%**); and Bifidobacterium breve HA-129 (5%**).
SUGGESTED USE: Take 1-3 times daily, dissolved in 1/4 teaspoon (1 gram) of concentrated probiotic powder in infant formula, water, juice, or any other infant food. For best results: Alternatively or in addition to the suggested use, mom or dad can also apply some probiotic paste (probiotic powder plus a few drops of water) to his/her clean finger and let baby suck the probiotics from there, or apply some probiotic paste to mom’s nipple(s) before breastfeeding to benefit both infant and mother.
STORAGE: Refrigeration ensures maximum potency and stability of live bacterial cells, and guarantees number of cells listed at date of expiration on the label. Freeze to increase stability and prolong potency. When traveling, keep in mind that 1-2% of live probiotics die each day when not refrigerated.
In addition to Udo’s Choice® Infant’s Probiotic blend, we have 3 other age-specific probiotic blends: Udo’s Choice® Children’s Probiotic, Udo’s Choice® Adult’s Probiotic, and Udo’s Choice® Advanced Adult’s Probiotic. We also have 3 condition-specific probiotics available.
